What a child will become when he grows up is not predetermined at his birth. However, we often behave this way. The publishing house “Exmodetstvo” publishes a new book for children and teenagers “Become better and achieve success”. “Daily Baby” publishes an excerpt about how important it is to think correctly in order to become successful, and most importantly — to understand what it means for you.
What is a way of thinking?
The way of thinking is the totality of our beliefs and views on the world. They determine how we think and feel, how we behave. Professor Carol Dweck, an expert in this field, believes that there are two types of thinking: fixed thinking and growth thinking. Let’s look at it in more detail.
If you think that you are talented (or not) in something by nature — you have a fixed mindset. Maybe you think that you are an excellent swimmer or have an excellent command of the French language. You may also feel that you are a terrible tennis player, a terrible dancer, and natural sciences are not your thing at all.
Such thoughts will not help you. If you think that you are naturally good in one area or bad in another, you will not be able to improve your skills. We know that diligence and hard work are an important component on the way to becoming better. By continuing to think that you will not succeed, you are condemning yourself to failure in advance. What do you think, if one of your friends says right before the start: “I run terribly!” – will he be confident in his abilities? Of course not. He will believe in his own words, and this will affect the result.
Negative thoughts and emotions can prevent us from achieving success and becoming better.
The formula is very simple:
THOUGHTS + EMOTIONS = BEHAVIOR
I used to have difficulties practicing playing the piano. I was bored and angry. I wanted to play outside, so sometimes I gave up and stopped classes. After learning about different types of thinking, I realized that I have a choice. I decided that if I wanted to stop again, I would check with my feelings and my goal. If I really need a break, I’ll take it. But without a good reason, it is better not to shy away from the planned exercises.
Having a growth mindset, you believe that you can master any new skills. You focus on what you can control: your mood, the amount of hard work, as well as on how you react to failures and come back to normal after making mistakes.
There are no limits to what you can learn!
Journey through the forest
Imagine an overgrown thicket with huge trees. Tall grass, mud, roots and thorny bushes are everywhere. There is no paved path here, and you need to find tools with which you will break a path through the thickets. You get scratches, stumble over roots hidden in the ground and continue to wander through the forest. You’re afraid that you might drown in the swamp. The road seems insurmountable. But you keep going and at some point you realize that you are enjoying it. And finally, you come out of the forest on the plain, tired, but happy!
The second time you will pass through such a thicket faster. It’s still difficult for you, but you already know how to get around the swamp and the roots sticking out from under the soil. You get dirty and sweat, but this time you are not so afraid. You repeat your actions over and over again, and it becomes easier and easier for you. As a result, you still trample a path through this forest.
Paths in the brain
The same thing happens in your brain every time you learn a new skill. At first, you have to concentrate hard. And when the skill begins to develop, you no longer need to pay so much attention to your actions. This applies to everything you learn, whether it’s math or playing a musical instrument. The brain is like a muscle. The more often you use it, the stronger it becomes. When you practice a particular skill or action, it creates a path. If you repeat the same action several times, the brain remembers it, and each time the process becomes easier.
When I first started shooting, I was TERRIBLE! I couldn’t hit the target at all. I had to concentrate as hard as I could. But over time, I stopped thinking so much about my actions, because my brain already knew what to do, and I no longer made mistakes so often.
How to learn growth thinking?
To develop a growth mindset, it is necessary to get rid of the cliches inherent in negative fixed thinking that sometimes arise in our head.
Do you remember the one who said: “I’m a terrible runner”? If he had a growth mindset, his words would be: “I will train a lot and do everything possible to become better at running.”
To get rid of fixed thinking, try not to focus on the result, but think about what you will learn in the process.
There is also a positive fixed thinking. At first glance, it is not so bad, but you need to get rid of it, focusing on becoming even better.
Improve your way of thinking
Do you have feelings that are characteristic of fixed thinking? Write them down and see if you can replace them with statements inherent in the growth mindset. The right way of thinking is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for success. And understanding the difference between fixed thinking and growth thinking is the first step on the way to it. The more we learn about how we think, feel and behave, the easier it is for us to determine whether we are on the right course or whether something needs to change.
Train the growth mindset, evaluating what you can improve in, how you can become more resilient and what new ways to achieve the goal you are able to find.
